Toronto Tempo: Changing the Game

Discover the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s first Canadian team, bringing a new rhythm to Toronto’s basketball scene and inspiring the next generation of fans and players.
Toronto Tempo: Changing the Game

Toronto, stand up! After a year and a half of excitement and anticipation, it’s finally here—the WNBA is coming to our city with the Toronto Tempo. Okay, I’ll admit—the name “Tempo” had to grow on me, but the team colors? They’re on point. Growing up in Toronto, I never really dreamed of playing in the WNBA. I absolutely admired legends like Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker, but my sights were often set overseas. The idea of living abroad always intrigued me more, which in hindsight makes sense, coming from such a diverse city. Nevertheless now, with the world’s biggest stage for women’s basketball landing right here in our backyard, I can’t help but feel a renewed sense of excitement for the game.

Why Toronto?

Let’s be real—it makes total sense that Toronto landed this spot. Canada as a whole has been producing incredible basketball talent, but Toronto is the heartbeat of hoops culture. From the Raptors’ unforgettable 2019 NBA Championship run to the growing number of young players—many of them talented women—Toronto is the perfect home for the Tempo. This team will inspire the next generation of Canadian athletes and solidify our city as a basketball powerhouse.

More Than a Game

I have no doubt the WNBA is going to thrive here, and Toronto is going to embrace this team with open arms. The organization is already planning programs to connect with local youth, support women’s sports, and promote equality both on and off the court.

The Fire is Back

More importantly, the league’s growth over the past year has reignited my love for basketball. The excitement of college hoops to an incredible 2024 WNBA season, women’s sports have been on fire.

The addition of the Toronto Tempo is yet another step forward for the WNBA, a sign of its growing global impact. And while I might need to dust off my jump shot, the spark is definitely back. With the Tempo taking the court, Toronto is about to feel a whole new rhythm.
